Launching Project Rx - Mozambique!

As you may know, this past year has been quite busy. I have just finished up taking classes at Stanford, finishing graduation requirements, and writing my senior thesis, entitled "Cultivating Success in Community Based Health Initiatives: A Lesson From Mozambique". My findings will help be as I begin the next stage of my life: founding Project Rx – Mozambique. This undertaking is dedicated to educating individuals, particularly in rural areas where doctors and health facilities are not readily available for healthy, lifesaving behaviors. I will also help villages develop community gardens in order to create sustainable food sources in areas that lack sufficient nutrients for everyone.

Project Rx - Mozambique will be based in the rural village of Machava where health classes will be held and the community garden will be overseen.
Project Rx - Mozambique has been designed with the goal to empower and equip individuals, old and especially young, to protect themselves from the numerous health threats in their area. Not only does Project Rx seek to develop a community garden in order to overcome hunger in the area for many villagers, it also hopes to be a social development program where the community can come together and feel united through education. This is especially important for children, who face little or no schooling when they live in poverty, a problem that has plagued Machava and Mozambique as a whole.
The total cost for the project is $30,000. This covers:
• All living expenses for one year (including a car),
• Health teaching tools
• Community garden supplies

We are hoping to raise these funds for September 2009 through one calendar year, but the most crucial time for fundraising is now in order to pay for initial expenses and to forecast the following year.

My commitment to Project Rx - Mozambique hopes to span between one and two years, depending on the amount of funds raised. The last year of my life has been dedicated to planning and strategizing the intricacies of the program with new and old partners. My former partners, Pastor Young Ohm, National Director of African Leadership, South Africa, and Tobi Lin, Director of Communications, have helped me cultivate a plan of action based on their decades of knowledge in sub-Saharan Africa. My new partners, the Highway Community Church, have helped me devise a plan of action for everyone to get involved with the project.

In the next few months I will be raising money for Project Rx - Mozambique, as well as preparing my life for a year-long transition into Mozambican society. Please join me in this incredible journey. I will make all information about the project, including budgets, fundraising, and progress, available on
